Finding burial records in Hempfield Township

  • Death records. Pennsylvania has issued death certificates statewide since 1906. For deaths in Hempfield Township from 1906 on, certificates at least 50 years old are at the Pennsylvania State Archives and newer ones at the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Division of Vital Records in New Castle. For 1893 to 1906, check the Westmoreland County courthouse, usually the Register of Wills.
  • Cemetery records. Ask the cemetery's office or the church that runs it for burial and lot records. Many cemeteries are run by churches or cemetery associations; the Hempfield Township municipal office may know who cares for small or abandoned burial grounds.
  • Church and newspaper records. Before 1906 there is often no official death record, so church burial registers, local newspapers and the State Library of Pennsylvania are key sources for Hempfield Township families.
  • Local historical society. Historical societies often hold gravestone transcriptions, cemetery surveys and family files. The State Library of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg are good statewide sources.
  • Westmoreland County wills and deeds. Wills and estate files are at the Westmoreland County Register of Wills, and deeds at the Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds. Deeds can mention family burial plots.
