Finding burial records in Staten Island
- Death records for Staten Island. Staten Island is one of New York City's five boroughs, and New York State's Department of Health does not hold its records. The NYC Municipal Archives holds death records up to 1948, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Office of Vital Records holds newer ones. Staten Island death records at the Municipal Archives start in 1898, with scattered earlier records for its old towns and villages.
- Cemetery records. Contact the cemetery's own office, or the religious group that runs it, for burial and lot records. New York City appoints a historian for each borough, who can help with older and abandoned burial grounds.
- Local historian. Every New York city, town and village appoints a local government historian. The Staten Island historian and the local library are good places to ask about cemetery surveys, obituary files and old newspapers.
- Local historical society. Historical societies often hold gravestone transcriptions, cemetery surveys and family files. The New York State Library and the New York State Archives in Albany are good statewide sources.
- Richmond County wills and deeds. Wills and estate papers are at the Richmond County Surrogate's Court. Staten Island deeds are recorded by the Richmond County Clerk.
- FamilySearch. The free FamilySearch site has indexed New York vital records and town records that can confirm a death date before you visit.
