Finding burial records in Brookfield

  • Brookfield town clerk. The local registrar of vital statistics for Brookfield (ask at the town clerk's office) holds registers or duplicate certificates for deaths recorded there, and asking locally can be faster than writing to the state. Statewide, the New York State Department of Health issues genealogy copies of death certificates on file for at least 50 years.
  • Cemetery records. Ask the town clerk or the Brookfield historian who keeps burial records. New York requires every city, town and village to appoint a local historian, who may know of cemetery surveys and gravestone transcriptions.
  • Local historian. Every New York city, town and village appoints a local government historian. The Brookfield historian and the local library are good places to ask about cemetery surveys, obituary files and old newspapers.
  • Local historical society. Historical societies often hold gravestone transcriptions, cemetery surveys and family files. The New York State Library and the New York State Archives in Albany are good statewide sources.
  • Madison County wills and deeds. Wills and estate papers are filed with the Madison County Surrogate's Court, where they have been kept since 1787. Deeds are recorded by the Madison County Clerk and can mention family burial plots.
