Finding burial records in New Britain
- New Britain town clerk. The town clerk's office can help with death records for people who died in New Britain, and statewide records are kept by the Connecticut Department of Public Health's State Vital Records Office in Hartford. Recent records are usually restricted to close family; older ones are more widely available.
- Cemetery records. Ask the town clerk who keeps burial records. Many Connecticut cemeteries are run by private cemetery associations or churches rather than the town.
- Old town reports. Annual town reports often listed each year's deaths. Try the New Britain public library or the nearest library that keeps them.
- Local historical society. Historical societies often hold gravestone transcriptions, cemetery surveys and family files. The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History (formerly the Connecticut Historical Society) and the Connecticut State Library and State Archives in Hartford are good statewide sources.
- Probate, deeds and the Hale Collection. There is no county government in Connecticut. Deeds are kept by the town clerk, and wills and estates by the probate district that covers New Britain. The Connecticut State Library's Probate Districts by Town guide shows which districts covered New Britain over time. The Hale Collection of 1930s headstone inscriptions also has a volume for each town.
- FamilySearch. The free FamilySearch site has indexed Connecticut vital records and town records that can confirm a death date before you visit.
